Xmas Eve 2009

Well who would believe it!! I had heard that the sun sets on the East Coast of the South Island, near the longest day of the year. Well we have always known that the sun sets in the west, and I am sure it still does, but with the sun being so far South at this time of the year, and with the South Island being on an angle, you have the impression that it sets in the East! A friend had an image on her blip site, and I thought I have to see this! So last minute phone call to a friend, we set off for Birdlings Flat at 7pm. The sun was due to go down about 9.15pm. Well there was cloud about, and we thought we may not see it go down, but we saw it sneak down between some dark clouds on the horizon, and then some red beams came up and softly lit the clouds above before it was ll over. But yes we have now seen the sun go down on the East Coast.
While there it was very very windy, and the sea was relatively flat, and there is a grey gravel beach, so to keep myself amused I did some impressionist photography
